When we’re about to make a change in our professional lives and free our inner entrepreneur it’s easy to start looking for both belt and braces. We would very much like a plan B just in case. But sometimes that plan B might actually be a curse. Because you spend a whole lot of time crafting your plan B instead of investing your time and effort into making plan A work.

Commit to plan A, invest your time and energy in making plan A come true. Plan B might just as well wait in your drawer.

Ready for the last and final flip? 🙂

Flip 7: Follow >> Lead

To create your professional future you’ll have to put yourself in the front seat, grab the steering-wheel and decide where you want to go. Enough following. Time to take the lead.

As a leader creating your ideal professional life you have to communicate what you want. Because you know what? If you don’t tell anyone, no one will know. Sounds obvious but this is actually where many of us fail. It’s not enough to think or even write down what you want to do. Until we invent mind-reading, you must tell the world. Scary the first time but gets easier and easier.

There’s power in the words ”I WANT…”. When you say them out loud you will automatically start moving in that direction. When you tell the world ”I want…”, opportunities you could never ever dream of will show up.

Repeat after me: I want…

Time for some more flippin’!

Flip 6: Experience >> Potential

The future is the future, not the past. So why are we so obsessed with our past when marketing ourselves or our businesses? Think about it, what do you promote when applying for a new job or approaching a prospective client? For most, the answer is the past. We send in our resumes, we talk about successful cases from the past. And all this despite the fact that research shows that potential outshines experience when deciding whom to hire.

I’m not suggesting your experience is unimportant. I’m just saying it’s not THE thing. And most of all I like to stress this:

Don’t let your past experiences dictate your future.

Because the future is about the future, not the past.

Flip 5: Excuses >> Results

This flip might be a little uncomfortable at first. But to create your ideal professional life it’s a necessity. The truth is that either you have excuses or you have results. And you want results, right? That means you’ll have to pick up the baton and run. It’s your professional life and you are the one that will make it happen.

No time, no money, not the right competence, not the right network… We’re very creative when it comes to finding out excuses for not taking action. To create your ideal professional life, you need to be aware of your most common excuses. Once you know it’s an excuse, you can make a choice whether you want that excuse or if you rather want the result.

As a former engineer, I have to say something about Newton here 🙂 Newton’s laws of motion states that an object in motion stays in motion. Means the tricky part is to get started. Once you’re moving it gets much easier. To get past you excuses: start with a step almost ridiculously small – and take action.

To quote a famous sports brand: Just Do It.

Flip 4: Perfection >> Progress

Ever faced perfection paralysis? You know when you’re so overwhelmed by the idea of perfection you end up doing nothing. I certainly have. Today, everything changes so fast there’s no time for extensive planning and strategizing. If you wait until you know everything you’ll want forever. We all act in information-poor, resource-constrained and time-compressed surroundings. No one “knows it all”. In all honesty, could it even be you sometimes use planning and strategizing as an excuse for not taking action? (more about that in this LinkedIn post I wrote some time ago)

betaIf you’ve been with me for a while you know I like seeing myself as a beta version. Not perfect but making progress all the time. Every day I launch a slightly improved version of myself and my business as I continue my exciting professional journey. Why not give it a try?

There is no such thing as a right time, right place or right conditions. Stop being paralyzed by perfection. Commit to constant progress.

Flip 3: Should >> WANT

Alright, hope you’ve done some thinking since yesterday. Today’s flip might be THE MOST important one. It’s time to flip should to WANT.

You know there’s a whole lot of ”shoulding” going on out there. You should get a full time job. You should take another step on the career ladder each year. You should take that job because it will look good on your resume. You should

But when did you last ask yourself what you WANT? Time to start paying attention to what you want in your professional life. Quite often I meet people struggling with not knowing what they want. When we’ve talked for a couple of minutes they say ”What I really want is…. But that’s impossible”. My reply: Impossible is just a point of view.

In my experience we often know what we want, we just don’t know how to get there. And therefore we call it off as impossible. To create your ideal professional life you have to admit to yourself what you really want. No matter how far fetch it might seem. (if this realtes to you I reeeeally recommend you to check out my eBook)

So. Stop shoulding. Admit to yourself what you really want. And be very careful before you call it off as impossible.

Flip 2: Same, same >> Different

Why are we so eager to fit in when we were born to stand out? Why do we seem to think that one size fits all when it comes to our professional lives and our careers? I’m convinced there’s certainly NOT one size that fits all in professional life. Who sets the agenda for your career or how you’re running your business? You? Or what you think is expected by your family, friends, society…? Or maybe your limiting beliefs about what’s possible?

What if you start to use your unique combinations of strengths and talents no matter if it fits into your current role? What if you decided to walk your own path? What if you start nurturing your creativity every day so that you can look beyond limitations and design your professional life?

Think about that until tomorrow and flip no 3 🙂

Alright, ready for some flippin’?

Flip 1: Weaknesses >> Strengths

We’re experts on putting a whole bunch of time and effort on improving our weaknesses. Right? What if we put the same about of time and effort on enhancing our strengths?

You’ve probably heard this before, but do you actually apply it? When we use and enhance our strengths, it might not feel like work anymore. It’s easy and fun – and that cannot be work, right? Might actually be you have this feeling of ”cheating”…

If you feel like that I say congratulations! You’re on the right track. When you’re working in areas where you’re uniquely talented, work is both easy and a whole lot of fun. And that’s exactly how it’s supposed to be.

Start practicing today!

You know, starting and running a business doesn’t have to equal striving for exponential growth in terms of number of employees or profit or attracting venture capital for expansion. There’s a fast growing tribe of entrepreneurs who run their businesses to do inspiring work. They see their business as a tool allowing them to design the professional life they want and access their full potential. Maybe you’re one of them?

One thing that happens when you free your inner entrepreneur is that suddenly you realize there’s an alternative:

Instead of waiting for someone else to provide what you’re looking for, you can go out and create it yourself. Exactly the way you want to have it.

Remember this when you’re longing for a change. What are you waiting for? Why not create it yourself?
